There are plenty of true crime films to entertain, but few that reach alongside the likes of Richard Brooks’s In Cold Blood (1967), in Fincher’s Zodiac (2007), and in his abandoned television project, Mindhunter.

The film follows Loretta McLaughlin, a reporter for the Record-American newspaper, who becomes the first journalist to connect the Boston Strangler murders. As the mysterious killer claims more and more victims, Loretta attempts to continue her investigation alongside colleague and confidante Jean Cole, yet the duo finds themselves stymied by the rampant sexism of the era.
Unfortunately, Boston Strangler doesn’t offer much in the way of exciting filmmaking. There’s nothing overtly terrible about the piece; it’s safely competent and strictly respectful. However, the film’s script is burdened with wooden dialogue and ceases to find the necessary depth within its dogged protagonists.
