Way down East most noticeable feature is the scene toward the end of the film which was shot on location in a blizzard on a thawing river in Vermont. While the heroin (Lilian Gish) is drifting unconscious on a piece of ice towards rapids, her beloved (Richard Barthelmess) runs towards her jumping between pieces of ice and saves her just before she reaches the waterfall.

Way Down East is a 1920 Tearjerker Melodrama film, directed by D. W. Griffith and starring Lillian Gish. It was adapted from a popular 1890s stage play by Lottie Parker. Anna Moore (Gish) is a simple country girl who lives with her mother. They are dirt poor, so she goes to the city to ask her wealthy relatives, the Tremonts, for help.
