WHITNEY, Tex., Dec. 8 – Tris Speaker, the former great “Gray Eagle” of American League outfields died of a heart attack. He was 70 years old. The baseball Hall of Fame member was on a fishing trip with a friend, Charles Vaughan, of near-by Hubbard, Speaker's birthplace. Besides his widow, Frances, Speaker is survived by two sisters.
Speaker then joined Cobb in Philadelphia for the 1928 season where he only came to the plate 191 times and finished with a .267 average. Ty Cobb and Tris Speaker were unofficially banned as managers or full-time coaches by Commissioner Landis. In later years, Speaker became an advisor and part-time coach for Cleveland. 1 de mar. de 2007 · Tris Speaker at that time was included in the pantheon of the greatest, a small notch below Cobb, Ruth, and Dimaggio as an outfielder and hitter. Since then Speaker has become largely forgotten as players such as Williams, Musial, Mays (my childhood idol), Aaron, Mantle, Clemente, Bonds, Griffey, and others have joined this rarified atmosphere.

The outfielder played for the Boston Americans/ Red Sox from 1907-1915, and the Cleveland Indians from 1916-1926. Speaker’s final two years were spent with the Washington Senators (1927) and Philadelphia Athletics (1928.)

That’s because much of his career came during the 1910s with baseball card production being interrupted by World War I. Still, Speaker has a ton of cards.
