Life and Work. oseph Sheridan Le Fanu was born in Dublin in 1814 and died in the same city in 1873. He trained as a lawyer, but is only known today as an influential writer of Gothic and Sensational fiction. His forebears were of Huguenot extraction and were part of the Anglican Ascendancy, the Protestant elite that ruled Ireland.
