Nieto de Alice Sheridan Le Fanu , y sobrino nieto de Richard Brinsley Sheridan (ambos reconocidos dramaturgos), Le Fanu cursó la carrera de Derecho en el Trinity College, donde más tarde sería nombrado auditor de la Sociedad de Historia de La Universidad.
