William Howe was born in London on August 10, 1729, the youngest son of Emanuel Howe, 2nd Viscount Howe, and Charlotte, daughter of Sophia von Kielmansegg, Countess of Leinster and Darlington. His brothers were General George Howe, who was killed in the expedition against Fort Ticonderoga in 1758, and Admiral Richard Howe.

William Howe was born on Aug. 10, 1729, the younger brother of the future admiral Richard Howe. After attending Eton, he entered the army at the age of 17.
