La vita di Vanessa Bell, più nota come sorella di Virginia Woolf che come pittrice, si svolge agli inizi, e per più di vent'anni, come un romanzo vittoriano. Nasce a Londra nel 1879 da Leslie Stephen, critico letterario e curatore del Dictionary of National Biography, e Julia Jackson (figlia di Julia Margaret Cameron ), entrambi vedovi con prole.
