The Howling, simply put, is a fantastic, graphic and oh, so dark horror book written by a genuine master of the craft. As good as Stephen King, Ramsey Campbell or James Herbert. It opens with a brutal rape that is difficult to get through, but essential to set up the premise for the rest of the novel then favours the slow-burn of tension as things get steadily worse.
