The distinction between a great Winwood album and one that's only okay is dangerously small -- it has more to do with performance than composition -- and on Refugees Of The Heart, as on Talking Back To The Night, Winwood was unable to invest Will Jennings' pedestrian lyrics with the soulful feeling of which he's capable.
This is one of Steve Winwood's best albums, and I have them all. I made this purchase for a female pastor of an Episcopalian Church here in Des Moines. She loved it. Track number 8 is "In the Light of Day" was co-written with Will Jennings. It is without doubt a masterpiece!
