The Liverpool Institute. The Liverpool Institute High School for Boys was an all-boys grammar school in Liverpool. The school had its origins in 1825 but occupied different premises while the money was found to build a dedicated building on Mount Street. The Institute was first known as the Liverpool Mechanics' School of Arts.
The Liverpool Education Committee recognised the lack of attention being afforded to boys aged 11-14, which inspired the Institute to launch ‘The Florrie Pioneers’. Fundamentally a school-boys club, the Pioneers was open between the hours of 5pm-7pm, with 70+ attendees taking part in activities such as woodwork, basketball, gymnastics, boxing and football.
