O nome da Universidade Harvard vem do ministro John Harvard de Charlestown, que deixou sua biblioteca e metade de sua propriedade para a instituição após sua morte, em 1638. Até hoje uma escultura do ministro toda feita em bronze fica exposta no pátio em frente ao prédio da reitoria do Harvard College, uma das faculdades da universidade.
