William Ewart Gladstone was born in Rodney Street, Liverpool on 29 December 1809, the fourth son of John Gladstone, who had moved south from Leith some years earlier. Gladstone senior was a successful merchant, trading in corn with the United States and cotton with Brazil and owning extensive plantations in the West Indies, which were operated by slaves, although he was not a slave trader himself.
Gladstone served as Liberal Prime Minister four times (1868-74, 1880-5, 1886, 1892-4). His radicalism was disliked by Queen Victoria, who described him as ‘that half-mad firebrand’.
