Public Faces: A Novel. A story about high-up civil servants, written in the early 1930s and set in the near future, 1939. More accurately, though, it is about the layers of confusion, bungling, misunderstanding, laziness, fear, pride and vanity that lead Britain into a hideous international crisis and to the brink of war.
Just like Eric Linklater's The Impregnable Women (1938), Harold Nicolson's Public Faces (1932) is a prediction of a political and military future that did not come true. Swedish author Frank Heller, writing in the early 1940s called it a "splendid novel".
