Edward Lyulph Stanley (1839-1925), 4th Baron Sheffield, 4th Baron Stanley of Alderley, and 3rd Baron Eddisbury, educationist, was born at Grosvenor Court, London, on 16 May 1839. He was the third son of Edward John Stanley, 2nd Baron Stanley of Alderley (1802-1869).
Edward John Stanley, 2nd Baron Stanley of Alderley (13 November 1802 – 16 June 1869), entered the House of Commons as Whig Member of Parliament (MP) for Hindon in 1831 and became member for North Cheshire 1832 to 1841, and 1847 to 1848.
Edward Smith-Stanley, 12th Earl of Derby, 1st Baron Stanley of Bickerstaffe (1752–1834) son of Hon James Stanley later Smith-Stanley, styled Lord Strange (1716–1771), took the name of Smith in addition to that of Stanley in 1748 and Lucy Smith (d. 1759) 2nd daughter and coheiress of Hugh Smith, of Weald Hall, co. Essex.

Edward John, second Lord Stanley of Alderley, had been created Baron Eddisbury of Winnington, Cheshire, in 1848, during the lifetime of his father. He had a distinguished political career, being the member for North Cheshire from 1832 to 1841, President of the Board of Trade from 1855 to 1858, and Postmaster General from 1860 to 1866.
