Eileen O’Shaughnessy is better known to posterity as the first wife of the novelist George Orwell (Eric Blair) though she had intimated to friends that she had her own literary ambitions. This was illustrated in a poem written by Eileen in 1934 entitled ‘End of the Century, 1984’ inspired by reading Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World.
