Brigadier General Charles McDowell. The Morgan District Brigade was an administrative division of the North Carolina militia during the American Revolutionary War. This unit was established by the North Carolina Provincial Congress on May 17, 1782, and disbanded at the end of the war. The commander was Brigadier General Charles McDowell.
The Rutherford County Regiment was placed under the existing Salisbury District Brigade when it was created in 1779. This brigade was commanded by Brigadier General Griffith Rutherford. In may of 1782, the regiment was re-subordinated to the newly created Morgan District Brigade. The regiment included the following colonels and commandants: [1]
The Anson County Regiment was authorized on September 9, 1775 by the Third North Carolina Provincial Congress. The regiment was engaged in battles and skirmishes against the British and Cherokee during the American Revolution in North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia between 1776 and 1781. It was active until the end of the war.
The county militia regiments were subordinated to the brigade. At that time, two additional districts were added, further dividing the western part of the state (Washington District Regiment in 1776 and Morgan District in 1784). Also, district representatives were chosen and sent to the North Carolina Provincial Congress.
The Carteret County Regiment was authorized by the North Carolina Provincial Congress on September 9, 1775. It was subordinate to the New Bern District Brigade after May 4, 1776. The regiment was engaged in battles or skirmishes against the British during the American Revolution , including the Battle of Stono Ferry and the Battle of Beaufort .
Colonel Henry William Harrington (1779-1780, 2nd colonel): In 1776-1776, he was a Captain in the South Carolina Cheraws District Regiment of militia. In 1777-1779, he was a Captain in the Anson County Regiment. From July to December, he was Brigadier General Pro Tempore and acting commander of the Salisbury District Brigade.
