In the history of video games, the eighth generation of video game consoles is a term to describe the next iteration of consoles that are expected to follow the current seventh generation consoles, Microsoft's Xbox 360, Sony's PlayStation 3, and Nintendo's Wii.
The discontinuation of the 3DS in late 2020, shortly after the end of the eighth generation as a whole, saw the end of this generation coincide with the end of the dedicated handheld console market, at least among the Big Three, unless one counts the handheld-only "Lite" variant of the Nintendo Switch. But we're getting ahead of ourselves.
For video game handhelds, the generation began in February 2011 with the release of the Nintendo 3DS, successor to the Nintendo DS, in Japan, followed by a North American and European release in March. The successor of the PlayStation Portable, the PlayStation Vita, was released in December 2011 in Japan, and Western markets in February 2012.

In addition to growth of the mobile gaming sector, the eighth generation console market was affected by events in China, where the ban on video consoles was lifted in 2015, and the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, which delayed a number of game releases but saw a significant increase in video game purchases by people quarantined at home.
