Some of the Natal Native Contingent and the Natal Native Horse under Colonel Durnford, had the Westley Richards Carbine. This light rifle — [was] a capping percussion lock breechloader, was developed in 1858 and was known as the ‘Monkey-tail’, from the long curved lever at the top of the breech block, which, when lifted up, opened the breech.

Westley Richards Monkey Tail Carbine breechblock lever marked Westley Richards/Patent. Lockplate signed Westley Richards & Co., the tail with the date 1867 within a triangle. Brass fore-end cap, triggerguard and buttplate all numbered 830 as is the the breech. Single browned steel barrel band with saber bayonet lug.

In this thread I will describe how I make paper cartridges for the Westley Richards Monkey Tail. These aren’t exactly authentic (for starters, the bullet I use isn’t the historically correct one for the Monkey Tail) but the point is at least they work in an authentic fashion. They’re surprisingly accurate too!
A thorough search has not turned up one photograph of a Boer at Majuba using the ‘Monkey Tail’ Westley Richards capping breech-loader rifle. Some must have been used but most photographs show the Westley Richards falling-block rifle breech-loader, which used a number two cartridge of calibre 0,45/0,577 inch bullet.
