De berkshire is een oud Engels varkenras. Van oorsprong komt dit varken uit de regio Faringdon en Wantage, in het toenmalige graafschap Berkshire, wat nu Oxfordshire is. Het ras is bekend om het goede vlees, maar heeft een gemiddelde vruchtbaarheid. Daarom worden de varkens met vruchtbaardere rassen gekruist.
Geschichte. Berkshire wird auch als Royal Berkshire (Königliches Berkshire) bezeichnet, nachdem der Titel in einem offiziellen Akt in den 1930er Jahren an die Grafschaft verliehen worden war. Die Grafschaft ist eine der ältesten in ganz England, ihre Grenzen lassen sich bis in die Zeit von König Alfred von Wessex zurückverfolgen.

History of Berkshire. Historically, the English county of Berkshire has been bordered to the north by the ancient boundary of the River Thames. However there were major changes in 1974: the Vale of White Horse and parts of Oxfordshire south (locally, west) of the Thames were previously part of Berkshire, but were lost to the county in 1974.
