Opere principali. Walter Scott iniziò la sua carriera letteraria come poeta, ottenendo un notevole successo con opere come The Lay of the Last Minstrel (1805) e Marmion (1808). Oscurato dalla fama di Lord Byron, si dedicò ai romanzi storici, in cui combinava accurati dettagli storici con narrazioni avvincenti, creando un genere quasi da zero.
