His parents were Abraham Stoker (born in 1799; married Stoker's mother in 1844; died on October 10, 1876) and the feminist Charlotte Mathilda Blake Thornley (born in 1818; died in 1901). Stoker was the third of seven children (his siblings were: Sir (William) Thornley Stoker, born in 1845; Mathilda, born 1846; Thomas, born 1850; Richard, born 1852; Margaret, born 1854; and George, born 1855).

He pioneered techniques for brain surgery and was the president of the Royal College of Surgeons, also responsible for setting up Ireland’s first school of nursing.
One of their children, Sir William Thornley Stoker (1845-1912), became a successful surgeon, and served as President of the Royal College of Surgeons from 1894 to 1896. His brother Bram (1847-1912) was a novelist and short story writer - his most famous work being the Gothic novel Dracula - and theatre manager.
