On 23 July 1784 Hester Lynch Thrale married the Italian, Roman Catholic singer Gabriel Piozzi despite the opposition of her children and her friends, including Samuel Johnson , the literary lion who had lived with her intermittently for the past twenty years.

Hester Lynch Thrale, later Mrs. Piozzi (pēŏz´ē, pēôt´tsē), 1741–1821, Englishwoman, noted for her intimate friendship with Samuel Johnson. Daughter of John Salusbury, she married (1763) Henry Thrale, a wealthy brewer, whose home at Streatham became a gathering place for writers and artists and a second home to Johnson from 1765 until 1780.
Hester Lynch Thrale Piozzi’s work covers a wide range of literary genres, and constantly displays an entertaining and satirical humour together with an experimental and innovative style. Manuscripts, journals, published works and commonplace books also reveal her intellectual vivacity, and can be presented for critical discourse on female writing.
