Few politicians are as well, or as affectionately, remembered 50 years on as Bevan, and rarely is a politician’s name so inextricably linked to a particular achievement as his is to the creation of the NHS. This is especially remarkable, because at the time Bevan was far from popular.

He was editor (1940–45) of the socialist Tribune magazine. As minister of health (1945–51) in the post-war Labour government, Bevan introduced (1948) the National Health Service.
1 de jul. de 1998 · Aneurin Bevan was born in 1897 into a mining family in Tredegar, a village in the heart of the South Wales valleys. Bevan's biographer, John Campbell, sets the scene for Bevan's early years saying: "Coal was King. And the miners were the acknowledged aristocrats of labour." Inevitably Bevan began working down the pits while still a teenager.
