One of the most famous critics of John Stuart Mill, Stephen achieved prominence as a philosopher, law reformer, and writer.
James Fitzjames Stephen wrote this book to address the view of liberty, equality, and fraternity advanced by John Stuart Mill. Though the slogan for which the book is named is most well known for its association with the French Revolution, Stephen was more concerned with the seemingly plausible, and therefore more dangerous, defense of it by Mill, primarily in “On Liberty.”
