Robert Charles Winthrop (May 12, 1809 – November 16, 1894) was an American lawyer, philanthropist, and Whig Party politician who represented Massachusetts in the United States House and Senate from 1840 to 1851.

After being defeated for the position of governor of Massachusetts in 1851, Winthrop withdrew from politics. Since 1839 Winthrop had been a member of the Massachusetts Historical Society, and in 1855 was elected president, a position which he held for thirty years.

Robert Charles Winthrop (1809-1894) of Boston, a descendant of Governor John Winthrop of Massachusetts, graduated from Harvard and studied law with Daniel Webster. He was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, serving as its Speaker form 1847-1849, and later a U.S. Senator, filling out the unexpired term of Webster.
