He led the National League in 1935 with a .385 average while playing with the Pirates. A hard out, he struck out only 276 times in 6,622 career at bats.
Vaughan’s 1935 marks, a .385 batting average and .607 slugging average, remain team records. In addition to those league-leading numbers, his performance that year included 19 HR, 99 RBI , 108 runs, and only 18 strikeouts in 499 at-bats plus a league-high 97 walks.
Joseph Floyd Vaughan was born in Clifty, Arkansas on March 9, 1912, and only lived there for a year, but that was enough for his teammates to nickname him "Arky" when he arrived in the big leagues with the Pirates in 1932. Had he played anywhere but Pittsburgh, Vaughan may have been written into history as one of baseball's all-time greats.
