We turn now to the immediate ancestors of John Hasbrouck Van Vleck. On 20 February 1830, his great-grandfather Peter Van Vleck (b. 19 February 1806) married Ann Hasbrouck (b. 23 July 1803) and they had two sons. The elder, Joseph Van Vleck (b. 19 November 1830), became a successful business man and died in Montclair, New Jersey on 25 May 1903.
