  4. 10 de nov. de 2023 · In this essay, I reconstruct Schelling’s account of the state as second nature, and thereby the objective ground of freedom, in the System of Transcendental Idealism (1800). I first show that Schelling’s interpretation of the legal state as a ‘second nature’ indicates that ‘first nature’ has a key role to play in how we interpret the relationship of the state to individual freedom.

In his Introduction to the System of Transcendental Idealism (1800), Schelling states that “the objective world is simply the original, as yet unconscious, poetry of the spirit; the universal organon of philosophy – and the keystone [ Schlußstein] of its entire arch – is the philosophy of art ” (STI 12 [SW I/3:349]).
