O filme é uma adaptação do livro Child 44, do escritor Tom Rob Smith. A produção é baseada na história real do serial killer ucraniano Rostov Ripper, que cometeu mais de 50 assassinatos. Ele foi condenado e depois executado. A produção foi proibida na Rússia um dia antes da estreia.

The characters are sometimes thin, but Child 44 does not pretend to be classic literature.
