  4. I too have to agree. The Orchard Keeper felt like The First Novel. You see hints of the genius to come in later works. But they were yet to be honed and refined. His following two novels were more in line with the McCarthy we know, with his apocalyptic landscapes and explorations of human depravity while stilling remaining on the American south.
