Filha de Maurice e Sophie Dupin, ficou órfã de pai ainda criança, quando ele caiu de um cavalo no momento que acompanhava o príncipe Murat em uma campanha armada. Amandine teve a guarda disputada entre a avó e a mãe.

Nini’s parents, Solange Dudevant-Sand and sculptor Auguste Clésinger, had been engaged in a vicious divorce and custody battle when, in 1854, Clésinger kidnapped Nini and kept her for a month. Sand and her daughter, Solange, had no idea of the girl’s whereabouts.
