By 1883, the Manchester Municipal Technical School had begun to offer day courses covering a range of subjects including mechanical engineering, chemistry, bleaching, dyeing and printing.
The University of Manchester, in its current form, was created in 2004 with the amalgamation of the Victoria University of Manchester and the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST) to become the largest single-site university in the UK.
