Nato ad Edimburgo il 28 gennaio 1784, George era il figlio primogenito di George Gordon, lord Haddo, figlio a sua volta di George Gordon, III conte di Aberdeen. Sua madre era Charlotte, figlia minore di William Baird di Newbyth. Egli perdette il padre nel 1791 e la madre nel 1795, venendo cresciuto da Henry Dundas, I visconte Melville.

7 de mai. de 2023 · George Gordon, 1st Earl of Aberdeen was Lord Chancellor of Scotland; the 4th Earl served as Prime Minister. More recently, Haddo was a maternity hospital during World War II – over 1,200 babies were born here.
He took no part in Jacobite intrigues, however, and after his death, at Edinburgh on 30 Mar. 1745, his family stood loyally by the Hanoverians during the Forty-Five. He was buried at Methlick. A younger son by his third marriage, General William Gordon, was returned for New Woodstock in 1767. 8.

His early years were divided between the family home at Haddo House in Aberdeenshire and Edinburgh, but his father died in 1791 and his mother in 1795 and he was brought up by Henry Dundas, 1st Viscount Melville.
