Goodbye, Mickey Mouse. In the winter of 1944-45 from an air base in Cambridgeshire, England, a group of young American fighter pilots is flying mission after mission protecting the huge fleets of bombers penetrating deep into Germany. Two of the men are good friends and their lives intertwine ending in tragedy.
Based on the recommendation of a friend I bought a copy of this book - rather than tell you the plot (and spoil it for you) - the book deals with the tactics (and perils) of the fighter pilots of the 8th AAF - and the book starts out like 12 O'clock High with a nostalgic visit to an abandoned airfield in East Anglia.
The central storyline revolves around a love affair between a new pilot, Captain James Farebrother, and an English girl, Victoria Cooper. Another major plot line follows Lieutenant Mickey Morse, nicknamed Mickey Mouse, who is racing to be the first American pilot to break Eddie Rickenbacker's record of 26 kills from World War I.
