Gobseck est l'un des avatars de l'antiquaire de La Peau de chagrin, auprès de Derville-Raphaël. Mentor de Derville, il lui apprend les mécanismes du monde, tout en le dispensant de reconnaissance. Il existe deux hommes en lui : il est à la fois petit et grand, avare et philosophe, théoricien de l'argent qui « imprime le mouvement » à la vie.
