Edith Wharton, née Edith Newbold Jones, est une romancière, nouvelliste, poétesse et essayiste américaine. Sa famille appartenait à la haute société new-yorkaise. Elle passe une partie de son enfance en Europe (à Paris d'abord, puis à Bad Wildbad en Allemagne et à Florence) et sa famille ne retourne à New York qu'en 1874.
