The first Duke also set about rebuilding Buckhurst Park as a summer retreat, much cooler than Dorset House in London. Victoria Mary Sackville-West, known as Vita, was born at Knole in 1892 and grew up there, the only child of Lionel Edward Sackville-West (later 3rd Baron Sackville) and his cousin, Victoria Sackville-West. She loved Knole but was unable to inherit the estate due to the laws of primogeniture dictating that only men could inherit property.
