With this conversion, Howard developed strong and winning football, basketball, baseball and track teams. The male students were coached by Mr. T. Herman Graves and Mr. Ralph W. Long; the females by Miss Sarah Hill and Miss Marian Armstrong.

In 1948, the school became a high school that educated some legendary alumni until it closed in 1976.
