PowerPC G4を採用した機種からはPower Macと改称された。 Mac OS 9 以前の時代、 Macintosh のオリジナルである 680x0 系CPUのマシンとバイナリ互換はないが、 Mac 68Kエミュレータ を搭載しており、一部のシステムに密着したソフトを除くほぼ全てのソフトが使用できた。

One major factor that led to the discontinuation of the PowerBook G4 was Apple's internal experimentation with the PowerPC G5 for the company's next line professional-grade notebooks at that time.
