In 1956, Goodey’s Yard at Twyford was the setting of an unusual auction. 600 lots, from derelict cars to traction engines, horse drawn vehicles, a penny farthing and even an anchor were up for grabs. The merry-go-round, shown in working order with two serious children ‘enjoying’ the ride, sold for £150, quite a sum in 1956.

Berkshire House began its life as a dairy farm around 1902 and remained a working farm for four decades before conversion to a retreat and meeting location for the young United Nations. By the 1950’s it had reprised its role as a farm hosting herds of Argentine cattle across its 500 acres expanse.
