The residents are almost all Chinese and often speak little English, being fairly recent arrivals. This is also one of the poorest areas of San Francisco; the median income is around $20,000 a year (vs. around $76,000 city wide).

The Square was the heart of San Francisco and while the City expanded, the Chinese stayed in the area. For over 100 years, Chinatown has stood in this same location.
