Princess Margarita experienced ill-health in her later years. She was seen sitting in a wheelchair at Westminster Abbey as an invited guest at the wedding of the Duke of Cambridge, son of her first cousin Charles, Prince of Wales. Princess Margarita died in Farnham, Surrey, on 15 January 2013 after a long illness.

Maximilian was briefly engaged to his first cousin, Princess Beatrix of Hohenlohe-Langenburg (daughter of his maternal aunt, Margarita, Princess of Hohenlohe-Langenburg), although this was eventually broken off. In 1963, he followed his father as head of the former grand ducal house of Baden, styled HRH The Margrave of Baden, Duke of Zähringen.
