It is the ancestral home of German Emperors, Prussian Kings, and the Princes of Hohenzollern. The third and current castle at the site was built in the 19 th century. The property is still owned by the family of Hohenzollern.

The Hohenzollern Castle lies on an 855 meters high mountain called Hohenzollern. It still belongs to the family today. The dynasty was first mentioned in 1061. According to the medieval chronicler Berthold of Reichenau, Burkhard I, Count of Zollern ( de Zolorin) was born before 1025 and died in 1061.
