Paul I of Russia and his consort Maria Feodorovna, via nine children that lived to adulthood, had nineteen grandchildren. Moreover, through their grandchildren, Paul and Maria are ancestors of many European royals, including Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden , Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands , Felipe VI of Spain , Charles III of the United Kingdom , and Frederik X of Denmark .
Paul I was Emperor of Russia from 1796 until his assassination. Officially, he was the only son of Peter III and Catherine the Great, although Catherine hinted that he was fathered by her lover Sergei Saltykov. Paul remained overshadowed by his mother for most of his life.

Catherine I died two years after Peter I, on 17 May 1727 at age 43, in St. Petersburg, where she was buried at St. Peter and St. Paul Fortress. Tuberculosis, diagnosed as an abscess of the lungs, caused her early demise. Before her death she recognized Peter II, the grandson of Peter I and Eudoxia, as her successor.

Alexander II ( Russian: Алекса́ндр II Никола́евич; 29 April 1818 – 13 March 1881) (Old Style dates) was the Emperor of Russia, King of Poland and Grand Duke of Finland from 2 March 1855 until his assassination. [1] He is most famous for freeing the serf s in his Emancipation reform of 1861 .
