  1. 14 May – The abduction and brutal murder of June Anne Devaney, a three-year-old girl, at a Blackburn hospital leads to the fingerprinting of more than 40,000 men in the town to identify the murderer, Peter Griffiths who on 19 November will be hanged at Walton Gaol, Liverpool, for the crime.

Cole Porter introduced by Lorenzo Fuller, Fred Davis and Eddie Sledge in the musical Kiss Me, Kate. Ann Miller sang and danced the number in the film version. "A Tree In The Meadow" w.m. Billy Reid.

  4. The debate. Former governor Harold Stassen of Minnesota argued the affirmative. Governor Thomas E. Dewey of New York argued the negative. The debate was held on May 17, 1948 and was moderated by the chairman of the Multnomah County Republican Central Committee, Donald R. Van Boskirk. It is estimated that 40 million people listened to the debate.
