The Potter family had artistic leanings. Edmund was co-founder of the Manchester School of Design. Her grandmother, Jane Leech, and her mother, Helen, were both skilful embroiderers, and Helen also enjoyed painting in watercolours (Beatrix later inherited her grandmother's embroidery copy book and Helen's watercolour paintbox).
