5 de fev. de 2020 · Type specimen of Banksia integrifolia, collected by Joseph Banks and Daniel Solander in Australia during Cook’s Endeavour voyage. The genus Bankia was named for Banks by Carl Linnaeus the Younger who visited London in 1781-1782 and was a regular visitor to Joseph Banks’s house and herbarium in Soho Square.
16 de jun. de 2020 · Banks died in 1820 – 200 years ago this year – at the age of 77. His private herbarium subsequently became one of the founding collections of the Natural History Museum’s General Herbarium of over 5 million specimens. As a young man, Joseph Banks was a traveller.

Many of the artworks in his collections give an insight into this expedition. Cook's ship - HMS Endeavour - first sailed to Tahiti to observe the transit of Venus across the Sun.
