Corvin Castle, also known as Castelul Corvinilor, is a magnificent 17th century Gothic-Renaissance castle in Hunedoara, widely considered the most impressive castle in Romania. Also known as Hunyadi Castle, the castle was commissioned by John Hunyadi in the 15th century and was later restored and expanded by his son, Matthias Corvinus.

His father was John Corvinus, an illegitimate son of King Matthias I. His mother was Beatrice de Frangepan, the member of famous Hungarian noble family.
He was the son of John Hunyadi, Regent of Hungary, who died in 1456. In 1457, Matthias was imprisoned along with his older brother, Ladislaus Hunyadi, on the orders of King Ladislaus the Posthumous. He asked Beatrice and John Corvinus with signals to make peace, but he failed to reconcile them on his deathbed, as he had failed during his life. After Matthias’s death on 6 April, both Beatrice and John participated in the power struggle, but neither succeeded. John Corvinus could not acquire the throne, nor did Beatrice remain the ruler.

The studies showed that the Corvins have an ancient European genome composition, with the highest genetic similarity to European Neolithic samples also from the Carpathian Basin and to ancient Hungarian Neolithic and Copper Age ( mid-5th millennium to 3rd millennium BC) samples.
