George Henry Hodgson was born 25 January 1817 in London, England, to Rector and future Dean of Carlisle Robert Hogdson and his wife Mary Tucker. His older sister was Henrietta Mildred Hodgson, wife of Oswald Smith and great-great-grandmother of Queen Elizabeth II. Through his father, he was cousins to eminent naturalist Brian Houghton Hodgson.
