João Augusto casou-se no dia 6 de janeiro de 1752 em Stadtrona com a princesa Luisa Reuss de Schleiz, viúva do seu irmão mais novo, o duque Cristiano Guilherme. Tiveram os seguintes filhos: Augusta de Saxe-Gota-Altemburgo ( 30 de novembro de 1752 – 28 de maio de 1805 ), casada com o príncipe Frederico Carlos de Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt ; sem descendência.

Os pais de Augusto tinham planeado uma carreira militar para o seu filho mais novo, mas ele desistiu de tudo em 1769, entregando o seu regimento de infantaria de Gota ao seu sobrinho, o duque Frederico. Depois de tomar esta decisão, Augusto deu inicio a uma grande viagem pela Itália que durou desde 1771 até 1777 e conheceu Voltaire em Génova.
